'Living, Loving, Learning Together'

Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

Welcome to the Year Two class page! My name is Miss Mc Ardle and I am the lucky Year Two Class Teacher. Please take the time to explore our class page and see just how fantastic Year Two are. Don't forget to also check out our 'curriculum' page to find out more about what we are learning this year. The children will also be supported by Ms. Eddy.

A positive work ethos makes all the difference to your child's learning, so your support from home is welcomed and encouraged. Reading is a very important aspect of learning, so we actively encourage children to read every night.

It is important that children are accessing online learning such as Purple Mash, Mathletics and Oxford Owl Reading. If you do not have logins at home please ask.

Year 2 are working incredibly hard and have settled very well into their new Year Group.

Year 2 have created their own puppets using their design. We will now evaluate our puppets. We are looking forward to performing our puppet show of Little Red Riding Hood to the younger children in our school!

We have begun our new maths topic. We have developing our recognition of pennies, pounds and notes. We are now using numicon to support our understanding of making the same amount and finding the total amount.

Persuasive Language

We have explored persuasive language in our class text. What is the wolf saying to try and convince us that he is innocent? We have also read the True Story of The Three Little Pigs and Inside the Villain during story time to explore different viewpoints of characters and use of persuasive language.

This half term Year 2 will be exploring, designing, creating and evaluating puppets to preform a puppet show to younger children. We are developing our skills by learning how to join different materials.

The Wolf's Story

Today we have begun to look at our comparative text, the Wolf's Story. We have explored the similarities and differences of the Wolf's Story and Little Red Riding Hood. We completed a sorting activity to explore the different viewpoints of the wolf and Little Red.

Year 2 have begun to explore how we can share objects into groups. Next week we will develop our understanding by exploring division and how we can use our knowledge of multiplication to help us.

Year 2 are recapping their knowledge of primary and secondary colours. We have explored a painting of Vincent Van Gogh and have discussed which primary and secondary colours that he has used.

Human and Physical features of Geography

Today we learnt the difference between Physical and Human features of Geography. Human and physical features are things that you can see all around you. Physical features like seas, mountains and rivers are natural. They would be here even if there were no people around. Human features like houses, roads and bridges are things that have been built by people. We completed a sorting activity and came up with definitions for each feature.

This half term Year two are continuing their topic of materials. Today we planned a simple test to find out 'Which material is best for blocking a hole in a bucket.' We used plastic, paper, cardboard and fabric. We discovered certain materials absorb water whilst others are waterproof.

Little Red and the very Hungry Lion

Year two have begun their class text for this half term. Today we compared the similarities  of our book to the fairy tale 'Little Red Riding Hood.'

Year two have begun their Geography topic by revisiting their learning of the four countries and capitals cities of the UK. We used maps and atlases to locate these. We created playdough maps and named and located the seas that surround the UK.

We discussed the importance of Bonfire Safety and came up with some rules to follow. We then created Bonfire Night displays using black card and oil pastels.

We have begun to learn about the zones of regulation.  The zones help us to recognise our feeling and emotions. We have begun to look at ways in which we can help ourselves when we are in different zones.

Red Zone

Elated or experiencing anger, rage, devastation, or terror when in the Red Zone.

Yellow Zone

Stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone.

 Green Zone

Happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone.

Blue Zone

Sad, tired, sick, or bored.

This week Year 2 have recapped their previous learning of algorithms. When designing a computer program we design the scene, write the algorithm, create the scene and add the code. We used 'Air traffic control' on purple mash to write our algorithm using the code blocks.

Year 2 have been learning about Nelson Mandela and Rosa Parks and their global achievements. We created fact files about Nelson Mandela.

Year 2 have learnt about the zones of regulation and how we can use this to help manage our feelings. We have created posters for our display.

This week Year 2 have been learning all about Judaism. We have learnt about Shabbat and how Shabbat begins on Friday evening and ends on Saturday evening. It is a special time. During this special time, Jewish people make and eat Challah bread. Year two have had lots of fun learning how to make Challah bread.

Year 2 have learnt about bulbs this week. We have planted daffodil bulbs in preparation for our plants topic in Spring.

Eco - Warriors

This term, Year 2 are reading Dogger by Shirely Hughes. Dave has just found Dogger at the Summer Fayre however he has been bought by a little girl! Today we developed our speaking and listening skills through conscience ally. We took turns listening to others opinions on who should get to keep Dogger.

Year 2 are enjoying their Rugby Tots sessions every Tuesday! They are learning the skills of passing and handling by playing some fun rugby games.

This term in Science, Year Two will be learning all about materials and compare the suitability of a range of everyday materials. Today we carried out a simple test to find out how well different materials bounce.  We gathered and recorded our data to find out which material bounced the highest and lowest.

Year two have been learning all about tens and ones up to 100! We are using whole-part and bar models to help us. Today we used base 10 to help us partition numbers by 1s. We recorded how many times we could partition a number using our numbers sentences.
