'Living, Loving, Learning Together'

Year 5

Hello everyone, welcome to Year 5's Class Page. I am Mrs Shaw the Year 5 class teacher. The children are also supported in their learning by Ms. Rose. The children in Year 5 are fantastic learners. Explore this page to see some of the fantastic, exciting things we have done this year. You can also head over to our Curriculum Page to see more about what we are learning this year!

Your child has access to Purple Mash, Mathletics, Timestable Rockstars and Spelling Shed. Please allow your child to access these websites at home to continue their learning at home.

Reading is a very important aspect of learning, so we actively encourage children to read every night. Please listen to your child read and write what they have read in their Reading Record. Your child should bring in their Reading Record into school in their school book-bag every day.

Every Friday, homework will be given out or set online using Purple Mash and Mathletics, and this is to be handed in on Thursday the following week. The purpose of this homework is to review what the children have learnt during the week. Year 5 will also complete arithmetic/reasoning tests in class which they are to take home and revise from each week. The children should identify areas of the test that they find challenging. The children are encouraged to come and see me if they are unsure on any of the questions and we can go through this together.

The children will also be given spellings to take home to learn. Please practise these spellings with your child.

If you or your child are ever unsure on a piece of homework, please do not hesitate to speak to me. A positive work ethos makes all the difference to your child's learning, so your support from home is welcomed and encouraged.

P.E is currently taking place on a Tuesday where your child will take part in Swimming and Rounders. Please ensure that your child arrives to school in full P.E kit ready for their lesson. It is vital for the children to wear full P.E kit so they can take part in the P.E sessions safely and comfortably.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Shaw

Religion Education: Creating Courage Jars

Our Christmas Carol Service

Celebrating Advent by making Christingles!

Religious Education: Creating artwork of the O Antiphons

Geography: Trip to the World Museum

Religious Education - Using Adobe to create a poster

Religious Education - Using drama to explore 'Growing in Virtue'

The children created 'freeze-frames' to model how we can 'Grow in Virtue' as a school. We explored different positive habits (virtues) we could live by each day in our school. We explored different examples of acting with great love and discussed the importance of doing small things each day with great love. The children then created freeze-frames of the different things they could do each day. The children used the iPads to photograph the freeze-frames created. We discussed how we follow our Holy Cross Values and live by our mission statement 'Living, Loving and Learning' together. Our school and classroom is a special place to be. See our wonderful examples below.

Science - Farming Project

Year 5 had the amazing opportunity to take part in an aquaponics 'Future Food Heroes' programme delivered by Liverpool's only vertical farm, Farm Urban, which focuses on educating pupils about sustainable food growing! Farm Urban is situated on the riverfront in Liverpool where they grow leafy greens hydroponically in a vertical farm. Over the next few weeks, Year 5 will create their own aquaponic system where they will get the opportunity to learn about global food challenges, grow edible plants together in an aquaponic ecosystem, grow mushrooms using a kit that includes spent coffee and cardboard and develop ideas to bring circular food growing into their local community and reduce food waste. We are looking forward to exploring this hi-tech food growing more!

Religious Education - Virtues

In our Religious Education lessons, we have been discussing what virtues are. We spoke about how a virtue is a trait that shows you are a good person. We listed different virtues we have in Year 5, such as; kindness, honesty, love, faith, hope, courage, wisdom, to name a few! In our books, we created a Diamond 9 to show which virtues we feel are more important and least important to us. We discussed how these positive habits (virtues) can help us live a good life, they help strengthen our relationship with God and our friends. We then explored using AI on Adobe Express to create an image to represent the virtue of our choice. Look at our wonderful creations below!

Religious Education - Moses and the Burning Bush

In our Religious Education lessons, Year 5 have been learning about the story of Moses, focusing on the Burning Bush and the Ten Commandments. In this lesson, Year 5 explored the scripture about the Burning Bush. The children then reflected on the words and images used to describe Moses' encounter with God. The children created their own piece of artwork surrounded by words that stood out to them within the scripture.

Art - Frida Kahlo

In Art, Year 5 have been learning about the artist Frida Kahlo. The children have enjoyed experimenting with paint creating different shades and textures in nature. The children drew their own self-portraits. The children then created their final piece of artwork, drawing and painting the animal of their choice but their self-portrait included! The children created a painting that represented their individual personalities, culture and heritage. The artwork created was superb. Every child is an artist.

PSHE - Kindness

In PSHE, we have been exploring kindness. We each create our own puzzle pieces based on the following questions: What kindness have you seen? What made it kind? How was it expressed? Why is it memorable? Why do you think it was done? How might you replicate it? After we had all created our own puzzle pieces, we joined them together to make one class puzzle to show what kindness looks like to Year 5.

Science - Properties and Changes of Materials

Year 5 have been exploring properties and changes of materials, in Science. In our recent lessons we have focused on the word 'separate'. We have learnt what a mixture is. An example of a mixture could be sand and water mixed together. We then explored a type of mixture called a solution. We learnt that a solute and a solvent added together makes a solution. For example; sugar (solute) dissolves in water (solvent) to create a solution. Year 5 explored different methods to separate mixtures and solutions. We used a sieve, filter paper and magnets to separate mixtures. We discussed how evaporation can be used to separate solutions. We had lots of fun being scientists - we love chemistry in Year 5!

A kitchen disaster has happened. Mrs Shaw accidentally spilled raisins and sugar into her bowl of flour!! My cake will be ruined. Year 5 helped Mrs Shaw by investigating how she can separate these materials. Year 5 were able to separate the raisins by using a sieve. We explored how we could separate flour and raisins because they are both insoluble. We discussed how we could not separate the sugar because it is soluble. Thank you for your help Year 5.

Year 5 worked scientifically to explore different materials solubility. We investigated whether different materials dissolve better in hot or cold water, or do not dissolve at all. We used a venn diagram to display our findings. We then presented our findings to the class.
