'Living, Loving, Learning Together'
Welcome to Holy Cross Nursery
In Nursery your child will be taught by Mrs Pinchi and Miss Brennan. We would like you to visit our class page often to see the many learning experiences your child will be having while in Nursery. You will also find information about our class topics and our curriculum. Please visit our separate curriculum page which has more detail about what your child will be learning this year. We hope your child has a wonderful time at Holy Cross Nursery.
This term the children will be reading the book 'The Bad Tempered Ladybird' by Eric Carle. The children will be learning about friendships and caring for others. They will study mini-beasts and learn about insects in our gardens.
We planted our potatoes in the garden.
We invited our mum’s into Nursery for a ‘well-being’ treat to celebrate Mother’s Day. We found time to relax by colouring in our Mothers Day cards. We then gave our mums a relaxing massage and had afternoon tea. We finished by signing some lovely Easter and spring songs.
We celebrated Easter by making an Easter bonnet, having an Easter egg hunt, decorating biscuits and then having an Easter picnic.
The children loved celebrating world book day. Julia Donaldson is our favourite author, we enjoy reading all her books but our favourite ones are Stick Man, The Gruffalo and A Squash and a Squeeze.
We designed our supertato using the iPads.
This half term the children will be learning all about the people who help us. They will learn about what it takes to be a hero, being brave, kind and helping others.
We celebrated pancake day by having chocolate pancakes for snack. We also had pancake races and introduced some maths vocabulary when we discussed who came first, second and third.
We had a Maths party. We used our feet to measure items in Nursery.
We talked about Celebration and the new year. We discussed the Luna new year and looked at how the Chinese New is celebrated in our city. The children made their own lion and acted out the story.
In RE we were learning about celebrations and discussing ways in which we celebrate. The children talked about celebrating Christmas and New Year. We then had a back to Nursery celebration party.
Welcome back to Nursery, we hope you have had a lovely break. The children have all settled back into the Nursery routines and are starting their new topic based on the story book 'Farmer Duck' by Martin Waddell and Helen Oxenbury. The children will learn all about the countryside and how it differs from the town and city. They will learn which animals live on the farm and what jobs the farmer does. Keep a look out for photos and information about the different activities the children will take part in over this term.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🥳
Thank you so much to all the families that came to our Christmas workshop!
We had a wonderful time at our Christmas workshop, making Christmas cards and the children sang their festive songs beautifully. 🎄 🎅
This half term the children will be reading the story Owl Babies by Martin Waddle. The children will be looking at the illustrations in the book and learning about environments that are different from the city. The owl babies live in a wood and so we will be learning about trees and how in Autumn the leaves start to fall from the trees. We will visit Calderstones Park to look at the trees and collect leaves. We hope to see some wildlife such as squirrels and birds. The children know that most owls are nocturnal and won’t be out during the day as they hunt at night. The children will be discussing how the weather and light changes during Autumn with the dark nights and windy weather.
Welcome back to Nursery we hope you had a lovely half term! We will be looking at Autumn and Winter with the children and noticing how the afternoons are starting to get darker and the weather is getting colder. We will visit the park and see how the wind has blown the leaves from the trees. We will be collecting autumn leaves to use in our classroom activities, making patterns with different shaped leaves, sorting leaves by colour, size and shape and also counting leaves in our maths activities. If you get the chance go for a walk in the park with your child and collect some lovely autumn leaves.
We have been supporting the ADHD Foundation a fabulous charity that helps families and schools. We talked about how people are unique and how it is important to appreciate everyone’s uniqueness. We donated money by buying their umbrellas we like to decorate them with fabulous patterns. We then hang them in our outdoor Literacy/Physical Development area. The children can use the umbrellas to copy the patterns and help develop our fine motor skills.
There are lots of a groups and activities happening in our local area, see the Children’s Centre time tables.
We have a number of workshops each week to inform parents and carers about child development and ways to help our children meet their next steps in learning. Every Friday from 2.15pm to 3.15pm we hold an Early Communication workshop in our Nursery class with Vauxhall Children’s Centre practitioners, who can offer family support and guidance. Please ask a member of staff about our workshops, all parents and cares are welcome.
Check out the Rising Stars website https://my.risingstars-uk.com/ regularly, to see which ebooks the children have been assigned and then share the story and the activity with your child.
The children have been learning about different faiths and have looked at Judaism. We made a star of David and learnt about Hanukkah.
Please take a look at the Liverpool Reading Pathway, to find out how you can help your child gain a love of books and become a competent reader.
The children will be reading the book Rumble in the Jungle by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz. Some children will be familiar with the animals from this book but for some children this will be an opportunity to learn about new animals and environments very different from their experiences in Liverpool.
We are learning all about our feelings.
We have books to help us identify our feelings. We look in the mirror and draw our expressions and how we feel. Our friends can help us feel happy.
We visited the NSPCC website and then decorated pants, we made a display to remind us that our bodies are our own and we need to respect our own and our friends bodies.
Come along and support your child in our early communication workshops.
We have been learning to say our prayers. We choose a name card and say a little prayer to thank God for our fiends.
We visit the library each week, come along and share a book with your child. Why not join the library and your child could have their own card and borrow books for free!
The children have been planting Pansies and Sweet Williams in our garden. The children were able to use a spade to dig up the soil and water the plants using the watering can.
The children have been learning to play the musical instruments while singing songs and nursery rhymes.
All the children have settled well in nursery and have started to make some lovely friendships.
In RE we have been learning our friends names and learning that our names are important. We played name games and songs to learn our friends names.
The children have been learning the class rules; tidy up when we have finished with toys, sit nicely so we can hear what others say, have gentle hands so that we don’t hurt our friends and break our toys, always walk inside so that we don’t fall.
Our new topic is based on the book My Nose Your Nose by Melanie Walsh. It is a book to help us celebrate our uniqueness and to see how how similar we all are.
The children looked in the mirror to help paint a self portrait. Although we are all unique in our appearance we are very similar in the thing we like to do.
