'Living, Loving, Learning Together'

Reception

Welcome to Reception!

Miss Mitchell and Miss Griffiths are looking forward to working together with you for the rest of the year and getting to know your child, their interests and all of the things they can do.

As parents or carers, if there is anything you are concerned about we hope that you will feel comfortable approaching us to discuss such matters. As an Early Years Foundation Stage team, we want you and your children to feel happy and comfortable with our setting and if there are areas that you have concerns about we want to work with you to rectify these.

A few little reminders, please ensure that your child has a book bag and a PE kit. These can be purchased from the main office.

We have started PE lessons which run on a Tuesday afternoon and so for health and safety reasons it is vital that all children have the correct PE kit, this consists of a red PE top, navy shorts and indoor pumps.

Book bags are important for all children to have as we have started sending home conversation books, and will be sending home number activities and words to learn. We aim to change books on a Monday and a Friday. Having a book bag means that everything is contained in one place and that all children feel part of our school.

We look forward to working with you all as the year progresses.

World book day

Well done to all the children and parents for putting so much effort into your costumes. We had a great day sharing our favourite books, writing book reviews and reading in unusual places. Have a look at our amazing costumes!

We're going on a bear hunt!

Reception have had an amazing school trip with the Storybarn. First, we went to Liverpool One and became story hunters. We stepped inside a hug chocolate cake, bravely explored bad things and made our way through the Bear hunt. We discovered some hidden rooms and clues which gave us an idea of Michael Rosen's life as a writer. We loved the storytelling and experiencing the stories with imaginative play.

We we also loved the Storybarn, where we explored, shared and discovered our love of books. We listened to reading from the story sharers, got busy in the creative crafting workshop and even had a go on the giant slide

Celebrating Chinese New Year

We have loved celebrating Chinese New Year. We watched a short video clip of a family who celebrate Chinese New Year in Liverpool. We watched as they cleaned and decorated their house, got dressed up in their smart new clothes and prepared some tasty traditional Chinese food. We then saw how they enjoyed the parade in town which was full of music, food and traditional dances such as the dragon dance. We decided to have our own Chinese New Year celebration in class so we decorated our classroom, dressed up in traditional Chinese clothing and played music and danced traditional Chinese dances. We had so much fun pretending to be the dancing dragon.

Making our display for 'We're going on a bear hunt'.

We have been getting creative, making all the different parts of the bear hunt. We have made swishy swashy grass, a swirling whirling snowstorm, thick oozey mud and a dark narrow cave. We have loved using a wide range of materials and textures to create our beautiful bear hunt display. We also loved getting our feet painted to make the footprints along the bear hunt path.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

We have been doing lots of learning within our topic, 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We have been searching all around the school for small, medium and large objects and used some of these objects to paint printed pictures. We have loved making our own porridge as part of a healthy snack and have also written some instructions on how to make porridge. We have been thinking about how the bears might have felt after realising Goldilocks had been in their house so we decided to write a letter from Goldilocks, apologising for breaking the chair and eating their porridge. We thought it would be polite for baby bear to reply to Goldilock's letter, explaining that she was forgiven.

Our Christmas Performance

We are so proud of all Reception and Nursery children following their amazing Christmas Performance. The children all worked extremely hard practising their songs, actions and words.  The children have also made some gorgeous Christmas gifts for our loved ones. We hope that everyone enjoyed the show.

Alice in Wonderland

We loved watching the amazing Alice in Wonderland performance by some of the Year 4/5 pupils. We watched a scene from the mad tea party and got to sing along and learn a dance. We also enjoyed our very own tea party in class where we decorated cake, had some juice and listened to music.

Mad Hair Day!

All the staff at Holy Cross were hugely impressed by all the effort both the parents and children put into Mad Hair Day! We thank you for all your donations for such a worthy cause!

We had an amazing maths-filled morning with Mr Godfrey, who visited Reception to complete maths workshops and play lots of fun games with us! We loved exploring the natural resources by constructing, measuring and comparing. We also learned some new songs which helped us to count backwards!

Outdoor Learning!

We love our new outdoor area! Reception children have been busy exploring our new area! We have been story telling, balancing, playing ball games and role playing some of our favourite traditional tales such as 'Billy Goats Gruff' and 'The Three Little Pigs'.

Up in the Clouds...

We attended a production by the 'Ten Ten' theatre company. The production was all about finding happiness in small things such as playing with our grandparents, showing kindness to our friends and praying for our loved ones.

We discussed the things that make us happy and shared ideas on how we could make others happy.

The Three Little Pigs!

We have been reading and role-playing the story of the three little pigs. We have loved building our own houses out of straw, sticks and bricks. We have even tried blowing them down ourselves!

We have made story maps to help us re-tell the story! We decided on the actions we could use for each part

A Mixed Bunch

Reception recently took part in a school art project called Take One Picture. We focused on a painting called 'A Mixed Bunch' and completed lots of creative activities based on the pictures. We discussed how each of the flowers in the painting is unique and different and how, we too, are all unique. We spoke about the things that make us special such as our families, our appearance and our cultural backgrounds.

We decided to create our own individual flowers using different textures and materials. We also made a huge flower display made up of our individual hand prints. We have displayed our flower in the hall for the whole school to view.
