Welcome to our Year 5 class page. I am Mrs Shaw, the Year 5 class teacher. Your child may also be supported in their learning by Ms. Hodges and Ms. Rose. This is an exciting year filled with new learning, growing independence, and plenty of opportunities for your child to shine. In Year 5, we focus on building confidence, developing strong learning habits, and encouraging each child to take pride in their achievements.
Throughout the year, your child will explore a rich curriculum, take on greater responsibilities, and continue strengthening their skills in reading, writing, maths, and Religious Education. We also place a strong emphasis on kindness, teamwork, and being positive role models within our school community.
Your child has access to Mathletics, TTRockstars and Spelling Shed they can access through their logins at home. Each child has been given a reading book and a reading record you can write in. We strongly encourage reading at home every night to support fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Book bags can be purchased from the school office if needed.
Homework is given out every Friday and is due back the following Friday. Homework may be completed in books or electronically through Mathletics tasks, depending on the activity set for the week. PE takes place every Tuesday and Thursday. On these days, children should come to school wearing their full PE kit so they are ready to take part comfortably and safely.
This page will keep you updated with important information, class news, and snapshots of our learning. I look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child on their Year 5 journey. If you ever have questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch.
Together, let’s make it a fantastic year of learning and growth!

English - Year 5 have been exploring vocabulary from Wonder as part of their English lessons. They took part in a card-sorting activity to discuss and group key words, helping them to deepen their understanding of language, meanings, and how vocabulary is used in context.

RE - Year 5 created artwork to represent the Transfiguration of Jesus, using paints and oil pastels. They explored colour, light, and texture to express the significance of this event and to reflect their understanding through creative work.

Art - Inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo, the children created self-portraits combined with an animal that represented them. They explored shading and mixing paints while expressing their own culture, identity, and personality through thoughtful colour choices and symbolism.

Science Workshops - Our class had an exciting opportunity to explore a planetarium. The children went inside the dome and were amazed as they learnt about space, planets, and stars all around them. They discovered interesting facts about the solar system and enjoyed watching the stars move across the sky. It was a fun and memorable experience that helped bring their learning about space to life.

Maths - Learning all times tables up to 12 × 12 and being able to recall them quickly is an important part of developing strong maths skills. We have been encouraging all children to practise their times tables daily through songs and practical activities, including creating our very own Radio City Times Table Tower! We also use a counting stick daily to count in different times tables, helping to build confidence and fluency. Please continue to support your child by practising at home. We have really enjoyed using TT Rockstars to make learning fun and engaging and children can continue this timetable fun at home!

Snow White - Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed watching the Snow White pantomime. It was full of laughter, colourful costumes, and wonderful performances that kept everyone entertained from start to finish. The children especially loved joining in with the songs and audience participation, making it a truly memorable and fun experience for all.

Messy Play Friends and Family - Thank you to all the parents and families who attended our recent Messy Play session. It was a great success and a joy to share such a special time together. The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring their creativity while making beautiful O Antiphons artwork using oil pastels, as well as creating their Christingles. We ended the session with a Celebration of the Word, focusing on the third Advent candle, followed by a fun and joyful song that brought smiles all around. Thank you once again for coming and for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you to future events.

Computing - Online Safety - Year 5 used Google Now>Press>Play headphones to take part in an 'Immersive Experience'. The children listened to a scammer attempt to bully a child into giving away his mum's bank details. The experience reminded the children how to stay safe online and never give away personal information.

Science – The children explored different ways to separate materials. We used a sieve, filter paper and a magnet to separate materials. We thought about the materials' properties to help us decide which was the best way to separate them. We discussed how we could use evaporation to separate salt and water!
Religious Education – We have been exploring scripture about David and Goliath. We spoke about how we could be brave like David. The children created courage jars to help them feel brave whenever they are worried or scared.

Religious Education - Creating artwork of the good shepherd - The children created artwork based on the theme of the Good Shepherd, thinking carefully about the qualities shown by Jesus and David. Through their work, they explored ideas of care, guidance, and protection, using art to reflect their understanding and personal interpretations.

Our Science Trip to Croda exploring the Science Industry - We enjoyed an exciting trip to Croda, where the children explored how science is used within industry. They learned about real-life applications of scientific ideas, saw how products are developed, and gained an insight into careers in science and engineering.

Our Chess Lessons - Year 5 are incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to be taught by a Chess tutor every Thursday, as well as an after-school chess club, which help to develop children’s mathematical skills and logical thinking. Through playing chess, pupils practise problem-solving, planning ahead, and making strategic decisions, all of which support their learning across the curriculum.

Prayer led by our Worship Warriors - Our prayer sessions are led by the children, giving them the opportunity to reflect, share intentions, and lead others in prayer. This encourages confidence, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of the importance of prayer within our school community.

Physical Education - In PE, the children have been focusing on the fundamentals, developing essential skills such as balance, coordination, agility, and spatial awareness. These building blocks help improve overall fitness and provide a strong foundation for more advanced sports and physical activities.

Maths Party - We love Maths in Year 5! - We had a fantastic time at our Liverpool Maths party! The children enjoyed fun and practical activities that made maths exciting, helping them to develop problem-solving skills and a love for learning in a lively, hands-on way.

Using AI in Religious Education -

Beautiful artwork in Religious Education - The children created artwork inspired by the Burning Bush, incorporating scripture that stood out to them. This activity helped them to connect creatively with the story, reflect on its meaning, and express their understanding through both art and words.

Praying the Rosary - The children have been praying the Rosary, learning the prayers and reflecting on the mysteries. This practice encourages quiet reflection, spiritual growth, and a deeper understanding of their faith.

Celebrating Black History Month - This February, we proudly celebrate Black History Month, honouring the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black individuals throughout time. It is a time to reflect on the achievements, resilience, and leadership of Black communities, as well as to recognise the ongoing work toward equality and justice. At our school, we are committed to fostering understanding, respect, and inclusion, and we encourage students, staff, and families to learn, share, and celebrate the inspiring stories that shape our world. Together, we can honour the past while building a future rooted in equity and opportunity for all.

Science experiment – Exploring mixtures and solutions - In our science experiment, students explored the difference between mixtures and solutions by testing how various substances interacted with water. We observed which materials dissolved completely to form solutions, like salt and sugar, and which stayed separate, creating mixtures, such as sand or oil. Through hands-on investigation, students learnt how to identify solutions versus mixtures based on solubility and appearance, gaining a better understanding of how different substances combine in everyday life.

Science experiment – Testing different types of sunscreen - As part of our science investigations, students tested different sunscreens to see which provided the best protection against UV light. Using a UV light, we observed how each sunscreen blocked or allowed ultraviolet rays to pass through, helping us compare effectiveness in a hands-on way. This experiment gave students a practical understanding of how sunscreens work and the importance of protecting our skin from harmful UV radiation, while also encouraging curiosity, observation, and critical thinking.

More Science experiments – Testing the hardness of materials and bubble baths!
