Welcome to Year Two's class page. Here you will find all the information you need for your child's learning. This year the children will be taught by Miss Dobson and are supported in their learning by Miss Randa. The children are all settling into Year Two well and working hard! You can also head over to our 'Curriculum' page to see more about what we are learning this year!
This half-term, PE will be taught on a Monday. Please ensure your child comes into school in their full PE kit.
Reading is a very important aspect of learning, so we actively encourage children to read every night. It is important that your child has their book bag every day so they are able to take home their reading record and reading book. The children will be listened to several times a week by different members of staff and therefore, need their book bags every day.
A positive work ethos makes all the difference to your child's learning, so your support from home is welcomed and encouraged.
In English, we have begun The Big Book of Beasts, a non-fiction text exploring different animals. This week, the children have been immersed in the topic through a range of engaging activities, including a “snowball” task where they wrote one fact, scrunched their paper into a snowball and passed it on to a partner to add another fact. This helped them share knowledge and build their understanding collaboratively.
On Fridays, the children focus on developing their problem-solving and reasoning skills through engaging maths activities. Some children take part in a hands-on, physical maths game, while others have the opportunity to use the Chromebooks to access interactive problem-solving games online. This approach allows pupils to apply their mathematical understanding in different ways, encouraging collaboration, discussion and strategic thinking. We have also recently begun our multiplication and division unit, exploring arrays and developing an understanding of what multiplication and division mean in practical contexts.
In Science, we were fortunate to visit the museum during the final week of term, where the children took part in an engaging workshop on vertebrates and minibeasts and enjoyed exploring the exhibits. This week, they were also introduced to our new plant unit by planting bulbs in cotton wool in plastic cups, allowing them to observe the early stages of growth.
We have begun our Geography unit by recapping the seven continents and five oceans, locating them on a world map and learning simple key facts about each continent.
In RE this week, we focused on miracles and explored symbolism in artwork, discussing how it shows that Jesus is the Son of God. The children created thoughtful “I wonder…” statements before reflecting on the story of Jesus healing the paralysed man. They considered how they can bring healing and show kindness to others, expressing their ideas through art. Alongside this, the children are beginning a kindness project, encouraging them to show care and kindness to one another. As a key stage, we are also promoting kindness during break times through structured play, where children will take part in four different games: Animal Statues, Stuck in the Mud, Duck Duck Goose and Simon Says. These games help children build teamwork, inclusion and respect while having fun together.
This week, one of our pupils kindly brought in gifts for everyone in the class to celebrate Ramadan. He also shared a presentation with his peers, helping them to understand what Ramadan is, why it is important and how he celebrates with his family. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about different faiths and traditions and the children showed great respect and curiosity throughout.
