Year One are looking forward to an exciting Spring term, full of curiosity, creativity and discovery. The children continue to show a positive attitude to learning and are developing confidence across the curriculum. This half term, PE will continue to take place on Monday afternoons. Please ensure your child comes to school in their full PE kit. PE kits can be purchased from the school office. For health and safety reasons, it is essential that children wear the correct kit and pumps.
Reading remains a key priority in Year One. Please continue to read with your child every night and ensure book bags are brought into school daily. Regular reading at home greatly supports children’s phonics, fluency and comprehension. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
This half term, our English learning is inspired by the beautiful texts Singing in the Rain and Float. Through these texts, children will explore descriptive language, imagery and emotions linked to weather, movement and feelings.
Throughout the unit, children will:
Develop rich vocabulary linked to the senses and weather
Rehearse sentences orally before writing
Use adjectives to describe characters and settings
Apply capital letters, full stops and finger spaces independently
To help at home, you can:
Talk about different types of weather and how they make us feel
Encourage your child to perform poems aloud with expression
Practise writing short sentences with correct punctuation
Read stories together and discuss characters and settings





Phonics teaching continues daily, with a focus on consolidating Set 2 and Set 3 sounds. Children will practise blending to read words and applying their phonics knowledge confidently in writing.
To help at home, you can:
Practise Set 2 and Set 3 sounds regularly
Encourage blending when reading unfamiliar words
Support writing simple words and sentences
Play phonics games to reinforce learning
In Maths, children will be developing their understanding of place value to 20, alongside addition and subtraction within 20. Learning will be supported through practical resources, visual models and problem-solving activities.
Children will:
Count, order and compare numbers to 20
Represent numbers using tens and ones
Add and subtract using concrete and pictorial methods
Solve simple mathematical problems
To help at home, you can:
Practise counting forwards and backwards to 20
Ask “What is one more?” or “What is one less?”
Use everyday objects to model addition and subtraction
Encourage number recognition in the environment


In RE this half term, children will study Branch 3 – Galilee to Jerusalem, following the Religious Education Directory: To Know You More Clearly. They will learn about key moments from Jesus’ life and explore what these stories teach us about God’s love and how Jesus treated others.
Children will listen to Bible stories including Jesus in the Temple, the call of the disciples, Jesus welcoming children and the story of Zacchaeus. Through discussion, creative activities, role play and prayer, children will reflect on what these stories mean and how they can live out Jesus’ message by showing kindness, forgiveness and love in their own lives.
Learning will also include opportunities for prayer and simple liturgy, helping children to develop a sense of wonder, reflection and faith.

In Science this half term, children will be learning about Plants, including trees. They will identify and name a range of common wild and garden plants, as well as recognise the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees.
Children will also explore the basic structure of flowering plants and trees, learning about roots, stems, leaves and flowers. Through observation, hands-on activities and outdoor learning, they will develop their understanding of how plants grow and what they need to stay healthy.
This half term in History, children will learn about David Attenborough and Mary Anning. They will explore who these significant individuals are, why they are important and how their work has helped us understand the natural world, both in the past and today.
In Computing, children will explore Creating Media – Digital Painting, linked to their Art learning. They will learn how to use digital tools to create pictures and experiment with colour, shape and line.

In Art this half term, children will develop their painting skills through a focus on exploring materials, learning new techniques and applying their knowledge.
Children will experiment with making thick and thin paint marks on a range of surfaces, using primary colours and the dip, dip, dab painting technique. They will explore the work of artist Piet Mondrian, inspired by Composition II in Red, Blue and Yellow, and use this to inform their own creative work.
PE lessons will continue weekly. This half term, children will develop fundamental movement skills, coordination and confidence through a range of physical activities and games.
In PSHE this half term, children will continue to develop their understanding of relationships, values and responsible choices.
Children will explore the theme All Are Welcome, learning about kindness, respect and inclusion. Through the Experian – Values, Money and Me programme, they will begin to understand the importance of making the right choices, helping others and learning about charity through Charity Job Week.
As part of online safety learning, children will take part in BBFC – Watch Out!, helping them to make safe and appropriate viewing choices. Through Journey in Love, children will also explore relationships and feelings in an age-appropriate and respectful way.
Lessons encourage children to reflect on their actions, understand the impact of their choices and develop care for themselves and others.
In Music, children will continue to sing songs, explore rhythm and pulse. Lessons support listening skills, confidence and enjoyment of music-making.
In Spanish, children are continuing to learn vocabulary for colours, numbers and animals. They are practising using Spanish words in context through songs, games and practical activities and beginning to respond to simple questions in Spanish.
