Year One are looking forward to a bright and engaging Summer term filled with creativity, imagination and new learning experiences. The children continue to grow in confidence and independence and are showing enthusiasm across all areas of the curriculum. They are taught by Miss Shen and supported by Miss Crute, Miss Eddy, Miss Justyna and Mr Connell.
This half term PE will continue to take place on Monday afternoons. Please ensure your child comes to school in their full PE kit. For health and safety reasons it is essential that children wear the correct kit and pumps.
Reading remains a key priority in Year One. Please continue to read with your child every night and ensure book bags are brought into school every Monday. Regular reading at home greatly supports children’s phonics, fluency and comprehension. Thank you for your continued support.
This half term our English learning is inspired by the texts Where the Wild Things Are and Zog. Children will explore imaginative storytelling, rich vocabulary and character development through these exciting stories.
They will work towards writing:
Setting descriptions
Invitations
Poetry using pattern and rhyme
Character descriptions
Instructions
They will also focus on key grammar and punctuation including capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, conjunctions, adjectives and simple sentence types.

Phonics teaching continues daily with a focus on consolidating Set 2 and Set 3 sounds. Children are now preparing for the Phonics Screening Check and will be developing confidence in applying their phonics knowledge when reading.
They will continue to practise blending using “Special Friends, Fred Talk, Read the Word” and will be encouraged to read longer and more complex words.

This half term children will study Branch 5 – To the Ends of the Earth. The focus of learning is on how people come to know about God through the life of Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit.
Children will hear and explore key stories including the Road to Emmaus, the Ascension and Pentecost. They will build on their understanding of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and begin to learn about the early Church.
They will also explore:
How the apostles shared the Good News
The role of the Holy Spirit and how it is represented through symbols such as fire, wind and light
The idea of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit (the Trinity) in a simple, age-appropriate way
How Pentecost is celebrated

This half term children will develop their Spanish through reading simple stories, singing songs and practising speaking and listening skills. They will learn vocabulary linked to jobs, colours, numbers and emotions, and continue asking and answering simple questions.
