In Reception, we help children develop their understanding of the world by exploring a variety of celebrations from different cultures and traditions. For example, we learn about Diwali, the festival of lights, and the ways families celebrate together; Bonfire Night, remembering history and enjoying safe traditions; Remembrance Day, thinking about peace and remembering those who helped others; and Holi, the colourful festival of spring and new beginnings. These experiences help children appreciate different cultures, traditions, and perspectives while learning about the world around them.
Harvest
This week, the children have been learning all about the harvest! They explored different vegetables, talked about how farmers grow our food, and thought about the important role farmers play in bringing food to our tables. We linked this to healthy eating, discussing which foods help us grow strong and stay healthy, and reflected on giving thanks to God for all the wonderful food we enjoy. Through these activities, children developed their observation and communication skills, showed curiosity about the world around them, and practised sharing their ideas and thoughts with others.
Diwali
This week, the children have been learning about Diwali! They explored the tradition of lighting diva lamps and made their own using paper plates, developing their creativity and imagination. They also used clay to shape diva lamps, which supported their fine motor skills and artistic expression. While creating colourful Rangoli patterns, the children practised their mathematical skills, spotting and making patterns.
Bonfire Night
This week, the children enjoyed learning about Bonfire Night! They created their own fireworks on black paper using chalk, exploring patterns and developing their creativity. They also made their own firework dances, using their imagination to think about firework sounds, which helped build their communication and language skills. Moving their bodies to represent fireworks supported their gross motor development, while encouraging creativity, confidence, and fun through active learning.
Remembrance Day
This week, the children have been learning about Remembrance Day. They created poppies and talked about people from the past who helped us, thinking about how their actions brought peace. Through these activities, the children practised their creativity and fine motor skills, developed an understanding of history, and learnt to show respect and gratitude. They also reflected on important values like kindness, thankfulness, and the difference people can make in the world.
