Welcome to our Year 5 class page. I am Mrs Shaw, the Year 5 class teacher. Your child may also be supported in their learning by Ms. Hodges and Ms. Rose. This is an exciting year filled with new learning, growing independence, and plenty of opportunities for your child to shine. In Year 5, we focus on building confidence, developing strong learning habits, and encouraging each child to take pride in their achievements.
Throughout the year, your child will explore a rich curriculum, take on greater responsibilities, and continue strengthening their skills in reading, writing, maths, and Religious Education. We also place a strong emphasis on kindness, teamwork, and being positive role models within our school community.
Your child has access to Mathletics, TTRockstars and Spelling Shed they can access through their logins at home. Each child has been given a reading book and a reading record you can write in. We strongly encourage reading at home every night to support fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Book bags can be purchased from the school office if needed.
Homework is given out every Friday and is due back the following Friday. Homework may be completed in books or electronically through Mathletics tasks, depending on the activity set for the week. PE takes place every Tuesday and Thursday. On these days, children should come to school wearing their full PE kit so they are ready to take part comfortably and safely.
This page will keep you updated with important information, class news, and snapshots of our learning. I look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child on their Year 5 journey. If you ever have questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch.
Together, let’s make it a fantastic year of learning and growth!

Computing - Online Safety - Year 5 used Google Now>Press>Play headphones to take part in an 'Immersive Experience'. The children listened to a scammer attempt to bully a child into giving away his mum's bank details. The experience reminded the children how to stay safe online and never give away personal information.

Science – The children explored different ways to separate materials. We used a sieve, filter paper and a magnet to separate materials. We thought about the materials' properties to help us decide which was the best way to separate them. We discussed how we could use evaporation to separate salt and water!
Religious Education – We have been exploring scripture about David and Goliath. We spoke about how we could be brave like David. The children created courage jars to help them feel brave whenever they are worried or scared.
