Year 2

Autumn 2

Welcome to Year Two

Welcome to Year Two's class page. Here you will find all the information you need for your child's learning. This year the children will be taught by Miss Dobson and are supported in their learning by Miss Randa. The children are all settling into Year Two well and working hard! You can also head over to our 'Curriculum' page to see more about what we are learning this year!

This half-term, PE will be taught on a Monday. Please ensure your child comes into school in their full PE kit.

Reading is a very important aspect of learning, so we actively encourage children to read every night. It is important that your child has their book bag every day so they are able to take home their reading record and reading book. The children will be listened to several times a week by different members of staff and therefore, need their book bags every day.

A positive work ethos makes all the difference to your child's learning, so your support from home is welcomed and encouraged.

This half-term is full of exciting learning in Year 2!

In English, the children are reading Little Red by Bethan Woollvin — an untraditional version of Little Red Riding Hood. This week we have been describing the wolf, and the children have written some fantastic character descriptions using expanded noun phrases.

In Maths, we’ve started our new statistics unit. We have been learning how to make tally charts and tables. The children took part in a practical maths lesson where they collected real data from their classmates about their favourite crisps, sports, fruits and vegetables. They recorded this information using tally marks and tables, and really enjoyed finding out which choices were the most and least popular!

Our Science topic this half-term is Animals Including Humans. We are learning about how animals grow, survive and stay healthy. This week, the children took part in some light exercise to observe and understand the effects of exercise on the body. They enjoyed noticing how their heart rate, breathing and energy levels changed after being active.

In Geography, we’ve been exploring our local city of Liverpool. The children learnt some new map symbols and what they represent, and then used this knowledge to draw their own maps of Liverpool. They really enjoyed spotting familiar places and adding features such as the River Mersey, parks and important buildings.

In PE, we are enjoying dance lessons and weekly sports coaching on Mondays, while every Friday we continue to have fun learning Spanish.

In RE, we are learning about Advent and the meaning of the Advent wreath and candles. This week, we really enjoyed our ‘Messy Church’ workshop with parents, where we worked together to be creative and make the different important Advent symbols. It was a lovely way to reflect on the season and prepare our hearts for Christmas.

In Computing, the children are learning about online safety and understanding their online reputation. We have been discussing how the choices we make online can affect ourselves and others, and the importance of staying safe and respectful when using technology

In PSHE, the children have been exploring feelings, likes, and dislikes, helping them understand emotions and build positive relationships.

We have also been lucky enough to experience a few Now>Press>Play lessons. During these sessions, the children wear headphones and are fully immersed in a story, following instructions and using their imaginations to explore a topic. We took part in a History adventure about the Great Fire of London, which the children learned about last half term. We also enjoyed a Science experience focused on exercise and eating healthily. The children absolutely loved being active learners and stepping into the story!

Finally, the children have been working incredibly hard practising for our Christmas nativity. We even had a dress rehearsal this week, where Reception came to watch and cheer us on! We are so excited for you to come along next week and enjoy the performance — the children can’t wait to share it with you.
